After only a handful of rehearsals with the new band during the spring of this year, I felt like a good next step would be to get into a studio and hammer out a few songs to act as a booking demo, and perhaps the start of a releasable recording. I settled on The Upside here in Lancaster with Cory Paternoster at the helm. The Upside is a rehearsal space and recording studio that became mostly known as a DIY venue over the past few years before being shut down by the township back in the spring.
We planned a full day of recording on July 26 with my aggressive goal of getting three songs tracked. We picked a few songs from three different albums that demonstrated the diversity of the setlist: “The Bottom” from Artichoke, “Notebook” from The In Between, and “Green Grass” from Boredom Breeds Curiosity.
After spending some time getting sounds, we spent the first half of the day tracking drums and bass. Erik and Brent did a great job nailing parts with minimal fixes, which allowed Cory and me to spend all afternoon on guitar and vocals. By the end of the day, with rough mixes in hand, we wrapped up my first day in the studio in a long long time.
There’s nothing like a studio to put the experiments of a rehearsals space under the microscope and really hear what you’ve been making. With fresh ears, I’m very happy with what we captured on that day and I’m really excited to get back in and finish up these recordings sometime in August.
